ABA 101
Applied Behavioral Analysis is a therapy commonly used with people diagnosed with Autism. An initial study done by Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas really spread the word that Applied Behavioral Analysis, otherwise known as ABA, was the way to help children with Autism learn. At times, the therapy has shown amazing results in children and adults, but it is not without some controversy. From the number of hours ideally required to show proven outcomes to the methods used in teaching the student, it may not be for every family if you are not ready to implement a program consistently no matter the environment. It is, however, one of the few evidence-based practices in the field of Autism that has proven results.
In our interview with Matthew Lehman, MA, BCBA, Mr. Lehman talks about what ABA is, how did it get started, how are children and adults evaluated, how are programs implemented, and what families might expect when a therapist begins their work with a child. Mr. Lehman is the Clinical Director at Able Pathways and a board certified behavioral therapist. Take a listen to our interview with Matthew Lehman.
